Internet Safety Assignment
As we begin our new school year and spend the first few days setting up new blogs, talking about an upcoming Voice Thread assignment, and trying to explain what RSS is to a new batch of students, one thing I want to emphasize right off the top with them is Internet safety.
We talked about creating good passwords and keeping them safe. We talked about the kinds of information you should write about and what you should skip over. We talked about not giving out last names, keeping email addresses and MSN accounts private. We've discussed the problems with keeping your blog safe and than placing a link to your own private piczo site that has way too much information on it.
I wanted to keep everybody thinking about this topic so I've given out an assignment to generate more discussion on the topic.
I've given the kids links to two videos on YouTube:
I've also given them these few questions:
INTERNET SAFETY
1.) What does the video for the song Online have to tell you about what is possible online? /2
2.) What does Online have as a lesson about online safety? /2
3.) What is the short movie Bulletin Board about? /2
4.) What are five things that you should do to keep yourself safe online? /5
5.) What are five things you shouldn't do to keep yourself safe online? /5
My idea is not to overwhelm them with information or to try to emphasize everything at once. It is to get them thinking about this important topic as many of these kids are stepping into the roll of online information creator for the first time.
