8 Random Things

I'm not usually an meme kind of guy. I usually duck and cover if I can to get out of posting something like this. But I have to admit, I've enjoyed reading all of the other posts and learning a lot of "off-the-blog" kind of stuff that people have been writing.

So in that spirit, after being tagged a few times, here are my 8 random things:

1.) I am motivated very little by things such as job titles, money, etc. I would much rather live where I want, have a job that I want, and be able to pursue interests that I have, rather then give these things up for an important title and a few more dollars.

2.) I am not really a very social person. I would love to have a few hours a day to sit and read, use my telescope, or spend in my canoe. This is very often not possible, but I would still like it to happen.

3.) I have had relatively few jobs in my life. I was a stock boy in a grocery store in highschool and a janitor for one summer. In university I worked for the local mining company in their mill, (3 summers, the dirtiest job in the world) and spent one summer working in a daycare to get some experience with kids. After graduating from university I worked in the Middle Eastern country of the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, one of the most amazing cities in the world) as a teacher and then returned to Snow Lake, my hometown.

4.) I am quite a serious Roman Catholic. I am the president of my parish council and a lay presider in my church. I've buried two people.

5.) My music and reading tastes gyrate wildly. I have a library filled with everything from Plato to the latest science fiction. My iPod is filled with jazz from the 40s and 50s to 80s heavy metal, through Bach and Mozart to all of the mp3s that kids in my class will give me.

6.) I have two speeds in my life: on and off. I work long hours between school, home life and volunteering and often have very few hours to myself. When I manage to get some time off, I quickly can become a slug and want to do almost nothing.

7.) My in - laws live five houses down the street from me and I actually like them.

8.) I spend too much money on clothes. I like expensive, hand painted ties and shirts with french cuffs.

While I think this meme is interesting, I still think they're like a virus and I won't spread it along.
