Using Fountain Pens Increases Academic Achievement

050pen_1

Now, I use one myself simply because I enjoy the feel and the "swoosh" factor, but one private school in Scotland has mandated that students use fountain pens for all of their work because the:

"private school's principal believes the old-fashioned pens have helped boost the academic performance and self-esteem of his 1,200 pupils."

I'm not quite sure what a response would be to this article. Pens increasing academic achievement? Of course the same argument could be made with computers. You can't simply put them in a classroom and expect achievement to rise. The article takes great pains to explain that the school is not turning its back on technology and that they have many computers in the building, but interestingly, the piece is titled "School Shuns Tech, Teaches Fountain Pen." The article also states that:

"Some people in wealthy nations argue that handwriting is becoming less important because of the growing use of cell phone text messaging and typing on computers, but the school disagrees."

$12 500 per annum in tuition......
